SCARABEO CAMP // GLAMPING IN THE MOROCCAN DESERT

As I am constantly looking for unique travel experiences (who isnt?), there was no hesitation when it came to booking Scarabeo Camp. After a chaotic 48 hours in Marrakech, our less than conventional camping experience was the perfect end to our whirlwind Moroccan adventure.

Scarabeo Camp is only located 40 minutes South West of Marrakech, yet it feels like a million miles away from any town. The camp is home to less than a dozen tents that are all carefully placed to maximise privacy and of course have jaw dropping views of the Atlas mountains.

The moment I unzipped the tent in the morning to breathe in the fresh, pure air of a desert sun rise, and take in the totally untarnished views over the mountain range is something I will never forget. It really was one of those “pinch me” moments!

The service here is discreet yet attentive. Although you feel isolated from the modern world, small luxuries such as regular cups of sweet mint tea, thick duvets and blankets on the beds and warming tent heaters make your stay more than comfortable. This is also the ultimate digital detox with no wifi or charging points.

What we ate:

Breakfast was the classic Moroccan spread of breads, eggs and fruit with copious amounts of strong coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Light lunches (my favourite) was a huge range of Moroccan salads accompanied with grilled chicken skewers, all washed down with a beautiful Moroccan white wine overlooking the snow capped mountains. An unforgettable setting for a great meal.

Dinner was a more formal occasion where we huddled in the candle lit dining tent for a glorious lamb tagine accompanied by a warming Moroccan red wine.

We ate the most delicious food at the camp during our whole stay in Morocco. Everything was so fresh and well considered – be prepared to eat well!

Activities:

There’s a number of activities available to guests at the camp. The extensive list includes yoga, massages, star gazing, hill walks etc..

We opted for the two hour desert quad biking excursion and a camel ride.

Always keen to get the best view of the sunset, we hiked a little hill to watch the last of the light fade behind the mountains.

Back to camp for sun down we enjoyed a few beers around the fire wrapped in Moroccan blankets. The night sky here, completely undisturbed by light pollution, gives you the most spectacular view of the milky way and all the planets. It was something so mesmerising our group fell silent staring up in awe on more than one occasion.

This place is paradise. Not in the conventional sense but it really is paradise. A beautiful setting, great company and good food meant we were in our element for the last 24 hours of our Moroccan adventure.

Scarabeo Camp is somewhere I would absolutely return, but next time maybe I’ll stay a little longer and enjoy more of the luxurious downtime the camp offers.

This looks amazing, definitely something I’d try to include in a Morocco trip in the future. Was it cold?! Morocco suits you and Freddie!

You should definitely do it. It’s a quick journey from Marrakech and feels like you’re a million miles away. It was cold at night but perfect during the day. The added bonus of going in January was that the camp was quiet and also it wasn’t unbearable heat in the tents like it is during the summer months.
